Another user running Netmail/3000 and Samba/iX happily on two boxes :-)

A colleague of mine found a handy test for smbclient (regarding the
localhost issue) that typically gives a helpful message to judge if
your name resolution is working as expected...

 :xeq /usr/local/samba/bin/smbclient "-L localhost"

If the error complains about localhost not being resolved, then your
name resolution is not working as expected (i.e. bad or missing hosts
file, incorrect resolv.conf file, bad nameserver entry or name server
not resolving localhost as expected).

If the error is about an "unfriendly server" then it is more likely
that the Samba/iX server job running SMBD is not running or in some
kind of trouble.

I used to do "smbclient -L my3000" but now prefer the localhost road.

Lars.
