Until recently I was in exactly the same situation and did
exactly as you are doing - I couldn't find another way and
nobody seemed to have a better idea.
 
If you move over to Windows 95 you'll find that you can use
the Microsoft Winsock to run your VT-MGR connection as well
as dial-up networking with PPP. Make sure you change your
connection information (in Reflection) to "best network"
and replace the fully qualified server.domain name with
its IP address. It works just fine.
