Fellow list readers:

There were lots of HP3000 and mpe/ix announcements to get
everyone excited. In addition, there were additional less public
happenings that generated interest and for some, outright excitement.
These issues are a direct result of the Interex advocacy process that
provides for a dialog with HP on items of interest to the user
community.

Two that might be of interest:

1. HP stressed their commitment to cobol. SIGCOBOL and HP had a very
good discussion about how to get the new standards incorporated into
a supported cobol product. This is a complex issue which is being
worked on by SIGCOBOL. HP's willingness to listen to the many cobol
developers and to dialog on this issue is very important to a lot
   of people.

2. A CSY funding model proposal was officially floated to HP management
through the roundtable process. This proposal as presented by me and
subsequently amended by Ken Sletten was the result of much public
discussion on this list and at IPROF this year. It appears that HP
is willing to discuss ways for this to happen and is open to the
concept. This is very encouraging and I am glad to see HP is willing
"to think outside the box" on this issue.

It was very encouraging to see significant progress being made in these
two areas.
