There is a "reasonably simple" way to do this. What I would do is use
the LeeTech Software CSF middleware solution.
- It is inexpensive
- It is fast (in operation)
- It will allow the desired transparency. (The user interface does not
have to change). You can build a simple API which, when used
by the operator, they will not be able to tell that the database
is on another computer! This is done by having a stub program
for each command on the HP 3000 and implementing the
real API on the INFORMIX database. The stub communicates
with the real API through a simple sockets-based mechanism provided
by the LeeTech solution.
- Moreover, it doesn't really care which computer is the client or which
is
the server. We have implemented applications in which a PC is the
server and the HP 3000 or HP 9000 is the client and vice versa.
Finally, although an ODBC solution would work, it is probably over kill in
terms
of the complexity it would bring to the solution.
We are a VAR for LeeTech. Please call if you want to discuss the matter
further.
