You need to do a binary transfer instead of an ASCII transfer.  Try
entering "bin" at the FTP prompt before the "put" line.  You should get a
confirmation that says something like "Type set to I" (which IIRC means
"Image").  FTP should then do a binary transfer preserving all the bits in
your file for LZW to peruse.  :)
