Although I'm still a Qedit user on the 3000, I like the WhisperTech
Programmer Studio editor for cross platform development.  I probably
would have tried Qedit for Windows but needed a Windows to Server based
editor that worked on Sun, IBM AIX and Linux platforms.  

I do recommend that Unix application developers learn a little bit of vi
for quick server based editing of scripts but for application
development, vi does not provide the programmer productivity available
in a Windows based development environment.

I like "vi".  (Hey, I don't want to hear it!)
pico is very popular. There is a nice screen shot of it here:

Pico is part of the mail package pine, but you can run pico standalone.
Since pico is primarly used for editing mail and used by non-system
admin types, it is designed to be easy to use. You can download pine
from
