The world according to myself.....
/etc/profile is executed when doing a "login" execution of the
shell.
:SH.HPBIN.SYS -L
Because of the way unix/posix/linux was designed, environment variables
belong to the process, not your "session". Such that when you exit the
shell, all known posix variables are trapped with its process as it
goes down the "black hole" to extinction.
However, I have found, that your MPE environment variables
are copied into (well, at least accessable) your shell environment.
You could do :SETVAR HOME "/SYS/PUB/.exrc" or wherever you
want it to be, in your logon UDC or command script.
I usually do :SETVAR TERM "hp2392a" so that I can use man from MPE.
