Hi Paul!
This is our job to create a tape with tar. Maybe it's not good for HP9000
but it's a starter for you:
* !JOB JSTARDAT,MANAGER.SYS,PRIVATE;OUTCLASS=LP,1

24 mknod /dev/dat c 0 7 (7=dev#)
25 tar -cvf /dev/dat CAPN9912 (CAPN9912=filename)

As metioned recently on this list, the stdlist is hard to read so typing it
in session could help you out whith the troubelshooting.
