As far as I know, 9x7 systems can't go beyond 6.5 PP2

A 997 is not a 9x7 system.  It along with all 99x systems, 992, 995, 996 and
997 are the "Emerald" boxes or T-class machines, and are fully suppored on a
software basis, if not hardware  to 3000 EOL.
