Hi Gord,
um.... I printed off and read your post.... a couple of times... to make
sure I didn't miss anything...

I found the same thing a while back when I asked what it would cost to
repair the charging circuit in my HP 34C calculator... I could have bought 4 HP
20C's for what they wanted...so I just bought a new 20C ! heheh :)

A lot of companies won't sell individual parts for their products so that
doesn't surprise me...

I am not familiar with the 2c Scanners... if it is older then HP may have
placed it on the obsolence (sp) list and thus the higher support costs....

Why not just buy the 5p if it is the same cost???

BTW, we have both a MicroTek and a HP flatbed color scanner in use
here... the HP does seem to have a lot less problems :)

Hewlett Packard MUST take responsibility for their products.

************************************************************
They make excellent scanners but.
SADLY NOT A BRAND THAT I CAN NOW RECOMMEND.

My Scanjet 2c scanner has a small problem, however,
Hewlett Packard refuse to sell replacement Parts.

A great shame as over the years that I have been in electronics Hewlett
Pakard have had such a good name, but like a great many North American
companies
are shooting themselves in the foot.

Being in the repair trade I DEPLORE the practice of not making
Repair parts available to the customer or repair shop.
Who are they to decide my level of competence to repair their product!
They need not warranty the new parts or accept them for return if they
fail to fix my problem, but they should support their product.

How can I justify advising a customer to go the bigger expense of?
Buying a "quality domestic product" ???????????
He can now buy the lower cost import with the absolute assurance that
He could not be treated any worse than at Hewlett Packard.

*********************************************************************
It is not my intent to damage the name of Hewlett Packard.
(They are doing a dandy job of that all by themselves)
My intent is simply to inform potential new scanner purchasers of the
Arrogant, and deplorable parts and service policy that exists regarding
Their scanners!

The following is a description of my effort to obtain a couple of spare
light bulbs for my scanner.

My scanner has developed a straw yellow band about
1 inch wide at the side.
Upon cleaning the lamps, it was discovered that the
bulbs are getting a little black on one end, lowering
the color temperature of the light Source.

It still works well for B/W but need to keep the color
stuff off to the side. Thinking they may soon burn out
I decided to try and get a couple of Spares.

NOT A problem I THOUGHT!
Well these lamps look like the sort of thing a man could buy
For about 10 bucks each....

Well they would need to be a certain color temperature, and high
intensity. Also they would need to be ordered from HP so I guess we better
double
that at least!

I was expecting to hear up to about $150 for the two of them!
I have contacted Hewlett Packard. Both here (in Canada) and in California.

I have been advised that they WILL NOT SELL internal scanner
Parts...
(Including plug in lamps)

They will however sell me such parts as a plug in power cord!
I was however advised that I should purchase a refurbished EXCHANGE
Scanner from their service center for $550. (Canadian).

YES ...... THEY GET TO KEEP MY OLD ONE!

(About $150 more than I can get a new Microtek flatbed color scanner up
here)

and

Exactly the same as the street price of one of the newest HP 5p models!

After the nice lady gave me the price she cheerfully informed me that the
Refurbished scanner would carry a 90-day warranty. I am afraid that my
Reply to both of their customer service people did little to brighten
their
day!

A sad and sorry, former HP customer.
