I think the best strategy is to write client-server code in Java; you
can then deploy the client anywhere you like (PC, Workstation, Mac)
and connect to the server code on the 3000.  If you have no choice
but to write a monolithic app (or you've picked up somebody elses
software and have no option of separating the GUI), you might look
at IBM's Remote AWT for Java, which will redirect the AWT calls
to a client that has the IBM client software installed.  Both
client and server are downloadable free from www.alphaworks.ibm.com.
