It's been a while, but that "thing" on the back side of the system is a MUX
card, which does permit you to hook up things like modems (and terminals and
printers). I seem to remember that HP never claimed to support these devices
used in such a way (after all, they were trying to sell you DTC's at the
time) but they did work if you could figure out how to configure them.

My memory is hazy here, but I believe your hunch is correct - you do need to
configure the port(s) via SYSGEN. I recall needing to specify a path when
configuring the port. If you do an IOMAP, you should be able to recognize
what needs to go in that field. To get an IOMAP, type in IOMAP from the ISL
prompt after choosing to boot from the primary path.

You could also hook up a modem to your DTC, but the fact that they all have
3-pin boards means you will have to rig up the cable to have DTR up at all
times.

Can you connect this machine to your UNIX box? Yes you can, but - given the
age of this box, you need a fair bit of expensive hardware and software to
do it - unless you are lucky enough to find a broker with the right
combination and versions of same to satisfy your requirements.

You can actually connect use your DTC's to connect to your UNIX box as well.
For that you will need HP's Openview DTCMGR software (either UNIX-based or
Windows-based).

Hope this helps.
