who unduly emphasizes minutiae in the presentation or use of knowledge c
: a formalist or precisionist in teaching

(For those not familiar with both US constitutional amendments and US
holidays, "Pleading the 5th" refers to invoking the 5th amendment, the
right to avoid self-incrimination.  The holiday, of course, being US
Independence Day, also creatively referred to as "the 4th of July.")
