I had the pleasure of talking with Jim Hawking, Kevin Cooper and also
Mike Paivinen yesterday at the Solutions Symposium West. We discussed
many things, one of which is LTO support.

They confirmed that LTO was indeed "supported" on 7.0 with a patch and
also on 7.5. We talked about the tests that had been performed on LTO
with various backup products, about 18 months ago. At that time, Kevin
Cooper had tested Hiback and observed a speed of about 23-25MB/second.
I am not privy to the performance of other backup products, but I was
told that some of them approached or equaled that speed.

I was also told that TURBOSTORE performed very badly with LTO devices.
This is especially so during restores, with rates in the hundreds of
bytes per second.

Bottom line: If you have a high-end, uncrippled N class box, are
running something other than TURBOSTORE and are on 7.5, you can use LTO
drives. They should work very well for you.

Denys

Subject: [HP3000-L] LTO support for mpe

I hate to bother everyone with an on-topic
post, but I was wondering whether anyone
knew the details about proposed support
for LTO on mpe...

I know this was being discussed at HP, but
haven't seen anything concrete.

All clues regarded as 'helpful' :-)
