I don't know about buffering, but the filename can be specified dynamically
at runtime using a call to an intrinsic to do a file equation before the
file is opened.  The file equation equates the FD assigned to filename in
the program with a physical file, or specifies attributes.  If this is a
batch process, the job itself can contain the file equation.  If you need
code examples, let me know.
