<soapbox on>

First, I apologize for blowing my stack before, but a few people deserved
it. A few Thank You's came thorough - but I thought an apology was in
order.

Now... some education. I advocate education - and it's warranted here.

Why you should not post to stuff like that coming across from Usenet, or
posted directly to the list? (By the way, the original message came via an
"anonymous remailer" - a server which will hide the originating headers and
forward the message "anonymously" -- no filtering here.)

1. The poster is lurking and getting their jollies by getting such a rise
from people. They're watch THAT thread and having fun watching people reply
with the stuff they write. Sounds weird? It is - but so are some people.

2. It's a total waste of bandwidth, disk storage (every NNTP server had to
store this and the replies, and will do so until all of the Cancels are
processed).

3. It wastes the time of people who maintain portions of this list. It
wastes Bruce Toback's time because he has to pull the stuff manually out of
the archive. It wastes my time because I have to issue Cancels on the
Usenet side, amongst others. Wasting our time makes us cranky - and if you
know us, you know that making us cranky is not really nice. I end up
blowing my stack eventually, and apparently, I beat Bruce to it by minutes.

4. It wastes everyone elses time - they have to delete your replies

5. Those with low bandwidth connections (such as 28.8/33.6 modems), have to
pull this garbage over. We here in the US are spoiled in that our phone
rates are rather nice. Those overseas are not so lucky. There's no such
thing as a "local" phone call outside of the US... so you are wasting the
money of people overseas. Have some consideration, eh?

6. Lastly, this happens so rarely that the temptation to reply is great.
Stop and think a minute -- how would someone who might be sensitive to the
subject matter take your reply? I received a "Thank You" this evening after
my tirade saying that they didn't appreciate any of this - and this person's
religious convictions fell under Christianity. Think of the other person,
OK? I know, it's hard -- "flame the SOB" is the thought... we've all been
guilty of it at one time or another, but think before hitting REPLY, REPLY
TO ALL, or SEND, OK?

So, if you feel compelled to reply to this kind of crap - please go find
another list. We have our humor and off topic items here, but this
"extreme" stuff should just die. If you see it, as was the mantra here in
the states some time ago: when you get the urge to reply - "JUST SAY NO".

</soapbox>

Regards,
Joe
