Maybe I'll take another look at a few of those CRN articles! :)

I "thought" it was the final assembly but I could very well
be mistaken. There are not a lot of sub assemblies for the
PC line anymore (I just bought a Pavilion 8160, and most
everything is on the motherboard with only a couple boards
in slots). I imagine HP ships the OEM software, the case,
keyboard, and the other "HP" labeled parts, and probably
arranges for the purchase of the other pieces on behalf
of the Channel Partner, then the Partner puts it together,
packages it, and ships it to the retailer. This is only a
guess since I only glanced at the trade articles on the
subject a while ago.

I have no knowledge of HP doing this for the 3000 or
9000 line although I can see it happening for the 700 series.
It would seem strange to me that they could actually do
that for the 800 and 900 series though (assuming the above
is actually what they are doing for the PC line).

<snip>

You mean do the subassembles, package them up and ship them
to another plant for final assembly? This saves money?

I think HP, Compaq and IBM are nuts if they do it this way. The
BETTER way is to automate the process from chips and sheet metel
to packaged product, including QC. Of course some human
intervention is required for the final QC (on an exception
basis). NOW the manufacturer can get volume production at a low
 cost.

MNSHO.
