Should the "d*" pattern match in VPlus match a blank field?

I have a VPlus form which has a field A of Ftype "O" and field B of Ftype
"P" (both are Dtype "CHAR). The edit specs for field B say:

if A match d* then
   justify right
   fill leading "0"

and I end up with zeroes in field B when field A is blank.

The manual says that "d" matches "digit (0-9)" so I didn't expect the match
to be true when field A is blank.

Incidentally, changing the edit specs to:

if A ne $empty then
   justify right
   fill leading "0"

works as expected; that is, field B is blank when field A is blank.

Is this the way it's supposed to work?
