Good point, Mike.

It also makes a good case for user volume sets. I know there are systems out there with 20 or 30 MPEXL drives which makes a failed drive a fun way to spend the week.

Raid storage (NIKE/12H scsi) has gotten pretty cheap and reduces the risk significantly. Even if you lose a controller, it's most often a recoverable situation without data loss.

I've never tried it, but I understand the UX DD command will create a sector for sector copy of a drive.

Anyone else used this to mirror an MPE disc?

Jack

Subject: [HP3000-L] The reliability of Tapes, was (Replacement of SE Scsi to DF Scsi Storage)

Very well said Donna.

Tapes also have their limitations, but what are our options? On a few
occasions, attempting to load from tape, I've found the tape to be
unreadable, and on other occasions I've had the tape chewed-up by the
tape drive. For this reason I always keep multiple copies of CSLT's.

Not being able to do this for SLT, FOS, and SUBSYS tapes, adds another
item to my MPE wish-list. Today with all the various binary formats and
disc imaging techniques, there should be a way to store these tape
images to disc, rendering the ability to make a new tape when needed. I
believe someone on the list had written some software to do this, don't
recall who? As time moves on, and our systems get older, this could be a
necessary solution for Homesteader's.

Mike.
