Good questions. The IMAGE error message, although correct, leaves room for wondering:
TURBOIMAGE ERROR AT $000c86a4; RETURN STATUS = -91
DBINFO, MODE 451, ON MGR OF COMPDB
ROOT FILE (DATABASE) NOT COMPATIBLE WITH CURRENT TURBOIMAGE INTRINSICS
Seeing this message, one may reasonably wonder whether the root file might be consistent with ANOTHER ("non-current") TurboIMAGE intrinsics. If so, having restored the database from an old tape might make sense. Fortunately, the Adager error message provides a very precise piece of information: The ACTUAL value of the root level. So:

Root level zero (i.e., ALL bits off) is not consistent with ANY IMAGE version. So, (at least) this value in the root file has certainly been corrupted and this particular root file could not have worked under ANY circumstances.
The Adager support folks are in contact with Dave Geis and, once we figure out what the fundamental cause of the problem is, we'll be delighted to share our findings with HP3000-L.
Cosmic rays, anyone?
