I don't remember if you can some of the special characters in the extension
for short name files (i.e., $), but assuming you can either use all of them
(66 options per location, I think) or none of them (36 options per
location), the maximum number is

287,496 = 66**3
 46,656 = 36**3

Since both of these numbers is less than the sqrt of the current number of
products available in DOS/WIN, they've all been used :):):)
