Lars came up with the best solution for avoiding HTML-based spam e-mail which
uses inline images to generate web server hits to track which e-mails are being
read.

Before reading any suspect e-mail whose validity cannot be determine by From:
and Subject: alone, I just click the online/offline toggle icon in the lower
right hand corner of the Netscape window. The HTML will still be rendered, but
none of the images will be retrieved since Netscape thinks I'm offline.

Once I've deleted the spam messages, I toggle myself back into online mode.
