It is like this.  You have very similar C compilers.  You split them.
6+ years go by.
64 bit data is added to C/UX.  (Pascal/UX no longer can be optimized.)
64 bit mode is added to C/UX.  (But not to Pascal.)

You split them again for IA64.

You could say the extra clutter would be a 5th way.
