Jon,

        I believe that either Steve Jobs or Steve Wazniac <sp?> worked for HP when
they designed the first Apple II.  It was built in an apple create, hence
the name, and they had to present it to HP first, to make sure they didn't
want it.  I believe it was one of those "While you work here anything you
invent belongs to us, unless we don't want it" deals.

I don't remember the specifics, but I vaguely recall that the 3k & MPE were
said to have had some direct influence on the initial design of the Mac and
its OS. One of the Mac architects used to work for HP or some such.
