Howdy,

Now you've done it. Really frosts my chalupas.

Late last June after a bunch of go around about y2k, etc I updated
Quiz from 7.29C to 7.29C8. I ran into the same access problems
as Steve had and I had when I updated from version whatever to
7.29C. Called Cognos and they were as much help as a freckle
on the sole of a ducks foot so I called DISC. I don't remember the
exact fix (inculded an update to Omnidex) but the problem was caused by the
sequence in which some libraries were being called so I fixed that.
Then Quiz would load but wouldn't run, so I called Cognos. Cognos was
as much help as a freckle on the sole of a ducks foot so I called
DISC ( note this was a Quiz problem not DISC's). They got me
back on the road again and all has been well since. Except for the
Omnidex update, every time I install the latest Cognos (Quiz) product
it goes kablooie (tech term is crashes) and in each case it was caused
by that horror show of a UDC (PHNMnnnnn). It's got a parm list that
reaches from here to Zrognak and no explanation of what they are/do.

In a nutshell:

If you plan on purchasing Cognos products bring $$$$. If you are going
to upgrade your hardware system and have Cognos products then
find out what the Cognos upgrade is going to cost before you bother
pricing the stupid hardware. Cognos is real qood at asking for dollars
but really blew it when it came to fixing problems. DISC ain't cheap,
upgrade fees here also lowers your overall blood supply but man they
give good tech service for the dollar, in this case on something that
wasn't their problem.

Don't go away I'm not done yet.

So in June I update the product and verify that whether or not it
(V 7.29C8) is "officially" y2k compliant it solves *our* y2k problem.
Then I take a few days off to holiday on Zorgnak (wonderful place!)
and get back to find the latest Quiz (V 8.19C1) sitting on my desk.
Hmmph......figuring after all the hassle I go through to update Quiz
and the y2k is OK for us issue, and the ultimate destiny of our
loved 3000 I figure "no way Jose". Stop the presses. Cognos
will no longer support the version I just installed beyond 12/31/98.
Yep the 3000 is on it's way out but it will be supporting pieces of
the production system through the first 1/4 of '99 so I gotta upgrade.
So I look at the intallation guide ......six pages dealing with
licensing, 1 page for installation + 1 paragraph dealing with Omnidex.
So it looks like the same drill all over again except under system
requirements I find that I must upgrade Omnidex again plus install
MPE/Ix 5.5 pp4. We are on 5.0.

Install a whole freaking operating system? Beg yer pardon? I have
to rip up the whole system just so I can keep up the flaky Quiz
maintenance?

I do not enjoy being forced into a UNIX environment and I'm sure
I will run into vendors with the same attitude. However, it will
provide me with the oppourtunity I have waited about 10 years for
and that is to tell Cognos to "stick it".

Well....got that outta my craw.
