In the flurry of activity surrounding the recent Halloween
activities, yet another golden hp3000 opportunity fell
through the cracks.

I must confess that I was the guilty party and I am deeply
chagrinned that, in typical top-level-management fashion,
I failed to see this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when
it arose and only became aware of it AFTER its time had
passed.

Christian Lheureux wrote to me on 27 October:

I saw your local venue is on Bald Mountain. Do you
intend to spend a night there?

Somehow, his message ended up in my Itanium mailbox and
sank to the bottom of the pile. After cleaning up some
snow today, I decided to do a serial scan of my email
and there it was! A bizarre happening, indeed
(etymology: from French "bizarre" odd, from Spanish
"bizarro" gallant, brave ;-)

Christian's clever reference to "A night on Bald Mountain"
by Moussorgsky should have given me enough material to plan
an appropriate OVERNIGHT trip to the top of Sun Valley's
Bald Mountain. Instead, I spent that fateful Halloween
night at the Adager Labs, working away on low-level
MPE-Image engineering projects. So low-level, in fact,
that I asked Stan Sieler (the highest-level master when it
comes to lowest-possible-level debug techniques) to give
me a hand with a tricky system-library issue.

As consolation, and so that I don't dwell on this
egregiously squandered hp3000 opportunity for Halloween
night, the fact remains that I *did* spend Halloween night
AT THE BASE of Bald Mountain :-)

Be it as it may, be sure to fire up your iTunes -- on your
favorite platform, whether Mac or Windows -- to listen (for
free) to the first 30 seconds of Moussorgsky's "A night on
Bald Mountain" or, better yet, to purchase all 12 minutes
of the piece for US$ 0.99 (if you don't have iTunes yet,
download it for free at http://www.apple.com/itunes/ and
get ready for an enduring top-level experience).

May your spirits soar to new heights as you listen to
Moussorgsky's "A night on Bald Mountain" and drink some
excellent French wine while you toast to Christian's health.

Salud y vida,
