Silly question. Can someone explain the difference between Binary and Ascii FTP transfers ?

I've been experimenting with FTP between our two HP3000s and assumed that I should use Binary FTP transfer mode for files described as "FB" or "VB" in a listf ,2 and Ascii FTP mode for FA, VA etc. (In fact, I went as far as extracting the relevant FOPTIONS bit using the Flabelinfo intrinsic before deciding whether to use Binary or Ascii transfer).

Today, I ran into a problem.

The following file (a compiled Vplus file) cannot be transferred using Ascii mode, but transfers OK in binary mode.

ACCOUNT=  xxxxxxx     GROUP=  TONY

FILENAME CODE ------------LOGICAL RECORD----------- ----SPACE----
SIZE TYP EOF LIMIT R/B SECTORS #X MX

FFUNXXA VFAST 256B FA 5316 5316 1 5328 8 3

Any thoughts ?

My own thoughts are that Vfast files really contain binary data (have you ever tried to print one?) so the file type is slightly misleading - these files really should be "FB".

Just to finish, here's an example of the error

....

ftp> ASCII
200 Type set to A.
ftp> PUT FFUNXXA.TONY.xxxxxx /XXXXXXX/RLTONY/FFUNXXB
200 PORT command ok.
150 File: /DEVELOP/RLTONY/FFUNXXB;REC=-256,1,F,ASCII;DISC=5316,3;CODE=1036 opene

d; data connection will be opened
452 End Of File encountered on target file during transfer. Target file not save

d. Increase file limit and try again. (FTPERR 16)
Data Transfer Request Failed. (FTPERR 13)
ftp> EXIT
221 Server is closing command connection

Many thanks for your time.
