Jim was wise to include the disclaimer that he couldn't validate the
accompanying explanation of the photo.  The contention that this picture was
"taken last November on a perfect night with no obscuring atmospheric
conditions" is ridiculous.  There is never such a night, and there is no
vantage point from which all continents on a spherical planet are visible at
one time.  The link at the bottom of the photo explains that "The above
image is actually a composite of hundreds of pictures made by the orbiting
DMSP satellites."
