VMWare was giving away their virtualization product (the equivalent to M$'s)
before M$ was. M$ has been trying to play catch-up for quite some time.
VMWare's upcoming next generation emulation will be another jump ahead.

VMWare makes their money on the big ESX/enterprise stuff, where they do
shine (at my client site we run about 200 virtual servers on a large
fault-tolerant/load-balancing ESX farm).

At 3k I run the freeware (VMWare) virtualization on a Dell PowerEdge 830
Linux platform and host a Windows and a Linux server on it.
