Thanks to all who responded.

I was using MPEX's SHOWPROC command (MPEX version 27N81128). As to what
the program was doing when the state was showing as TIMER, the user's
screen showed that it had just completed an FCOPY to a networked printer
and the program indicates that depending on the situation, it sometimes
updates several datasets after that. Maybe it was trying to return control
to the program after completing the FCOPY, or maybe it was trying to do
updates. The users usually don't tell me about the problem until after the
fact, so it is hard to know what was really going on.
