Well I thought there was some network command for this. So maybe what

Keven said about something in NMMGR is correct.

What I wanted was to have a range at the beginning where there is

NOTHING. Say the first network user gets LDEV 30 or even 100. (Console

20 notwithstanding.)

Otherwise what happens if you have only 3 disc drives say 1, 2, & 3, one

LP at 6, one tape at 7...

The first several hundred schmucks that log on (all day and all night in

a 24/7 shop) get network LDEVs 4, 5, 8, 9, and 11 through 19, then 22 ad

infinitum.  If the schmuck on LDEV 4 logs off the next guy will get it a

minute later.

So the thought occurred to me if I had a spare LUN lying around and I

wanted to spin up a new disc on the fly, it would have to be after the

last user on the last LDEV, it would get for example ... LDEV 449.

Because it can only take a non existent LDEV number nothing is using. It

just isn't pretty in the disc LDEV numbering scheme.

So if I wanted LDEV 4 in a 24/7 shop I'd have to wait until a planned

shutdown.  Or I could spin up LDEV 449 now and just not give a damn.

Then just wait before the next shutdown and do an MD on 449 in SYSGEN to

make it LDEV 4 and do a KEEP before the reboot.  The LUN won't care it

is just a path.
