Dave,
I understand completely. I too want to get the most band for the buck. The problem here is you are dealing with HVD SCSI hard drives.
As far as I know HVD SCSI drives have not been manufactured in 5 years, probably more.
Take a look, current hard drives use SATA, and the older ones are ATA/IDE...
The same is true buying memory, you will pay a premium for memory that is no longer being manufactured.
It is simple supply and demand. One way to increase the supply is to turn non HP/Clarion drives into usable drives, but re-writing the SCSI ID. Forget your soldering iron, get out your hex editor. ;-)

I was and wasn't kidding about the 1TB drive.
When I have to walk into the bosses office and say I have to spend $$$ for a
couple of 9GB drives, eyes roll.
My eyes roll also.
My company isn't short on spending a little money, but when I have to spend
it for them, I am not trying to cut corners to risk the company data, but when
I can do this at home, and have a 20gb drive that I purchased back in 1999
and its still running fine, hey, what the heck?
When I have to spend money for the company, I always sit back and say to
myself "would I do it if I needed it at home?" or "would I do it for myself?". If I
know I can get a 20gb for 9.99 or a 40gb for 10.99?
Granted, spending $750 for a 36gb drive would not cause a eye to blink in
front of my boss, but I just think its nuts.
If I have to, I would easily get it it no problem, but companies out there are
making a fortune selling a 1TB for under $100.
I don't need a 1TB, 18gb would do just fine, I just can't see spending a load of
money for it.
I know somebody out here has a hint for me.
Thanks all
p.s. Soldier gun is warmed and ready.
