We have had two external SE DLT4000 drives on our 959
for years;  have done several system update and patch
cycles using one of them as the boot device;  never had
any kind of hardware or software problem with the DLTs...

Yes you can boot from the DLT, but HP doesn't have a media option to deliver
O/S on DLT.  So you'll need a DDS anyway to upgrade your O/S to a new
release.
