     The HP replacement for the 293x printers is the P405, manufactured by
     PSi GmbH in Germany and OEMed by HP. The HP product number is
     PSYP405P. I have a included a few of the specifications for this
     printer to address the issues brought forth above.

      The P405 is a 24 needle, serial impact dot matrix printer. It
     represents a high performance, highly reliable printer offering a
     sophisticated paper handling and various other features. The basic
     printer model is configured with Serial/ Parallel interface,
     including Emulation of HP 293X and HP2235 printers.

     It will handle six part stationery in a single pass.

     Media
           The P405 provides the capability to process a wide range of
           papers an form sets that is:
                 * Fanfold Paper
                 * Cut Sheets
                 * Transparencies
                 * Multipart Forms
                 * Envelopes and Labels

      Following bar-codes are implemented:
                 * Code 39
                 * 2 of 5 industrial
                 * 2 of 5 interleaved
                 * Codabar
                 * EAN 8
                 * EAN 13
                 * Code 93
                 * MSI Mod 10/10
                 * UPC-E
                 * UPC-A
                 * Code 128 (EAN128)

     I hope this helps,
