I feel obligated to echo a story of another vendor's support service,
namely Randy Medd and Ross Scroggs at Telamon. A long, long time ago in
a galaxy far, far away we purchased a "PBX Engine" which is attached to
our campus PBX and collects LDX billing info. It has been there since
the early 1980s, and I'm wanting to say possibly back to the
late 1970s, but I think we were still on old analog stuff then. At
any rate...

Two weeks ago, we had a horrible thunderstorm here, and Murphy reached
out with his fickle finger of fate and struck the flagpole in the quad
with a bolt of lightning fierce enough to shear away a sizeable piece
of the concrete pedestal upon which it rested and split the sidewalk
on both sides. Bordering the quad were Founder's, Race, and Hooper
halls, all dating back to the turn of the century, and the old
electrical wiring as well as the new network wiring (to some extent)
picked up a considerable EM spike. We lost 23 switch ports, a dozen
or so motherboards, one LaserJet was completely fried, and getting
back on topic, our PBX switch blew out it's asynch port and also blew
out the asynch port on the PBX engine.

For the short term solution, both the PBX and the engine have a 2nd
asynch port, and thankfully they worked, so right off the bat, the old
beast keeps on kicking. We later discovered that the storm damages
had exceeded our institutional insurance deductible and we would be
collecting data to replace damaged equipment.

I don't think I've heard of the "PBX Engine" nor seen it in any ads in
the last decade, but on a whim I sent off an e-mail to Randy/Ross with
the subject of "Don't laugh too hard, but..." asking if they still had
any of these beasts lying around.

There was a new PBX engine in my office the following day.

These guys are incredible, bearing in mind we have never paid a cent
in support and never had contact with them since 1989 (according to
Randy, who was upset at updating our records for the new area code after
all this time).
