1.  how are you invoking the shell?  it should be: xeq sh.hpbin.sys -L
2.  what are your permissions/ownership for /etc/profile?  i've got 444
and manager.sys
3.  in the old days, we used to advise people to not modify
/etc/profile.  hp 'owns' this file -- that is it can/will be replaced
during an update.  you should have a /etc/profile.local file and there
should also be a reference to this file at the bottom of /etc/profile. 
the ,local file is for your own customization.  of course, now that so
many people are off of support (and we're so close to eol anyhow) maybe
this doesn't matter so much.

about your .exrc file -- did you do a listfile of your linux-copied
file?  was it bytestream? and what about it's permissions?     - d
