Basically, MAILX is Sendmail's user-agent. It's not designed for programmatic
control, though you can invoke it via command files. (You're not going to
get much back from it as far as status/result codes/confirmation that the
message actually got queued).

<plug> For an actual API (callable from most HP3000 languages and complete
with status codes and success/failure indicators - and highly efficient)
NetMail/3000 offers an optional API. It was written to the CMC (Common
Messaging Call) standard document - the same standard which M$'s MAPI
