We have been having a problem with the NS/3000 network services running
on our HP3000/987sx. We start to get a large number of "NETIPC errors"
on the system console and they have no job number or session numbers
associated with them. We then have users who can't connect or can't
reconnect to the HP3000, over the network. Upon further investigation I
discovered that there were a few VTSERVER processes running that had no
sessions associated with them. They were a system process only. After
stopping the network services entirely, these processes were still there.
I then tried a shutdown of the operating system. It got to "Shut 4" and
I then got the following error "System Abort 1516, Subsystem 123 System
Halt 7, $05EC". I had to reset the system and reboot to get it back up.
I called the Response Centre about the error message and they told me that
it was a bug in the powerpatch we are at (We are currently at MPE/iX 5.0
powerpatch 3.0). The reaponse centre told me that powerpatch 6.0 would fix
this or moving to MPE/iX 5.5 would fix this. I have MPE/iX 5.5 and am
planning to move to it in the new year. Since then this problem has happened
2 more times and upon shutting the system down, it hangs after giving the
"Shut 4 " notification. I had to reset the system. Has anyone had a similar
problem? Is this a bug with the level of the operating system that is
currently on the HP3000 or should I be looking at some other area to
solve this problem. I have to have this problem fixed asap as this
system is used for everything from Human Resources to Financial Services to
Academic Records and all these applications are being made available via the
Web. Thus this is a very important computer here at Mohawk College.

Thanks,

Eric.
