As some of you have noted, we are experiencing some problems sending
and receiving mail from our domain, particularly our Suns, but also
leaking over Raven. If this is affecting you (appears to be only a
small minority) I offer my apologies, and please bear with me as the
investigation is underway.

The problem appears to be premature connection resets by our relatively
new PIX firewall. Without going into boring detail, there are some
timing issues that need to be tweaked to differentiate suspicious
connections from legitimate ones, and the PIX tends to err on the
conservative side.

Observed behavior has thus far been delivery errors to utc.edu causing
retries by the remote mailer, and duplicate mail when connections don't
close completely and properly, causing the remote to resend. The latter
has caused Listserv to send a rejection notice to a few people saying it
is a "duplicate posting". You can ignore these as the post was indeed
processed the first time around.

I hope to resolve the problem soon, but thus far it is not readily
reproduceable at will, and clues are hard to pinpoint in the rather
large production logs.

Jeff
