I seem to be having a bad day. Can anyone help me out please.

I am trying to access an XL machine(not an A or N class) and can only get
port 21 internal modem to answer after you type ER on the console. It will
also only let me see what has been typed on the main console and will not
let me type in.

Any hints would be gratefully received.
