It's only half a joke. Much of American small- and even medium-sized
business seems to run on Intuit software these days. Intuit has decimated
the low-end accounting software market, and they're talking about
"enterprise" solutions. They'll even sell you a $1500 point-of-sale system
now (software plus cash-drawer, receipt printer, barcode scanner, and
credit-card reader for a PC) and they'll do your credit-card processing,
payroll, and other financial services as part of the package and for an
annual subscription.
