Several people replied, all saying generally the same thing:

I presume then that the problem must be at AOL. AOL itself is a network of
computers -- and I presume that one of them must be partially rejecting mail
or asking for retransmissions, but at the same time also passing whatever it
receives along, so that in the end, I get to see several copies of some of the
postings.

I got enough "Ancient Wisdom" postings to fill Frodo's footlocker several
times over.

My apologies for the waste of bandwidth.
