Thanks to everyone for their helpful suggestions.  By the time I started seeing replies, the tape (finally) ejected.  Still, the session was hung and SHOWDEV showed the drive unavailable.  At this point, ABORTIO against the device did the trick.

Hopefully, the errors were from a bad tape, and not the drive starting to go...
