Hi Gary,

I sent a reply last week but not sure if you saw it. So here is it again to
the group.

The most likely cause is a misconfiguration. The easiest way to get this to
work is to configure the port and modem for Bell protocol.

On the local console, enter the Access Port with ^B. Enter the CA command
and make sure the port is configured for Bell protocol. If you want to have
a mirrored console capability then enter the ER command to enable remote,
else enter DR to cause the port to connect directly to ldev 21 when the
modem answers.

In NMMGR check the configuration of the user port. Open the NMCONFIG file,
press [DTS] [Go to UserPort]. Verify that the modem protocal is '1', US
modem. If you needed to change the field, the press [Save Data] and validate
the file. If you modifed the screen, then you must reboot the system to have
the change take affect.

Since you said you can connect sometimes, I assume that the configuration in
Sysgen is correct, and the ldev in Sysgen for the remote port is the same as
the ldev configured in NMMGR for the User port. But it wouldn't hurt to
verify this also.

If this doesn't fix the problem, then the modem may need to be reconfigured.
Not knowing what modem you have, the critical settings are to have the modem
respond to DTR, ie, disconnect when DTR drops, and have the modem raise DCD
when a valid modem connection is established.

I hope this helps,
John Spitzer

suspect the modem or cable. I think there is something about the 918 I am
missing. I am trying to diagnose this problem over this phone so that always
makes it more interesting.
