When we were faced with the elimination of TAP, we used E-mails to cell
phones to notify of job failure, in lieu of TAP notification.
We didn't take down our networking services when backing up...We receive
messages within 5 minutes of HP3000 trying to send e-mails...although
sometimes it is 1 minute (or less) or 10 minutes (max).
We used Sprint and the e-mail is held until it makes contact with a tower
that can support the e-mail being sent. Worked well for us.

If you can send email to the phones, then get a copy of MAILNM from
ftp.telemon.com.

Subject: [HP3000-L] Pager replacement suggestions
Folks,
I'm being asked to eliminate the use of pagers and I'm trying to see if
the same functionality can be transferred to cell phones. Currently the
pagers are used for the following:
1. A batch job on the HP3000 pages me every 6 hours to indicate that the
server is operational.
2. The daily and weekly backup processes utilize the pager to notify me
in
the event of errors. I can then investigate remotely the problem or
drive
to the site for resolution.
3. Special store/restore jobs use the pager to notify me of their
completion and status.
4. Programmers can use the 'pageme' command file to receive status
information about their batch jobs.
I know that I could e-mail the notification, and in fact I am using that
scheme in other situations, but the problem with the e-mail approach is
the inherent delay (I've seen situations where the message arrives 2
hours
later) and the requirement of a network connection (The network
interfaces
are taken down during our backups).
The cell phone service used is Cingular and I read somewhere that they
eliminated their TAP service numbers (can anyone confirm that through
personal experience?).
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Regards
Paul Christidis
