Jim:
I believe that the error message is HP's way of saying "I spun the tape for
a while, but I couldn't determine whether it's a labelled or unlabelled
tape." Sounds reasonable for a brand-new tape. We get that message quite
frequently; ignore it; go on about our business. Backups, etc. work just
fine despite the message.
