You are correct in that the original solution worked as you describe,
primarily as a distance extender.  However, there is now a solution that
allows scsi on the 3k and fiber on the XP side.  It was announced about the
same time that the XP512 came out.

Yes, but from what I've been told, the SCSI/Fiber bridge has to be
converted back to SCSI before going into the XP.  In essence, the
SCSI/Fiber bridge is nothing more than a SCSI distance extender.  On
other boxes, you might be able to get away with what you are talking
about, but on the HP3000, with MPE/iX, you are still talking SCSI.
