I'm reminded of my Geomorphology course in the 1980s when my professor described the history of it.
Seems someone back in the late 1800's (or early 1900s) came up with a theory on landform change over time. Professors built their dissertations, PhD's, wrote books, and based their entire careers (and payroll and departments) on the science for about 50-odd years.
Then sometime in the 1950s or 1960s, came plate tectonics and the old theory was tossed out the window.
How science changes.
