FWIW, thanks to my one-year old daughter, I got to see Charlie Rose
interview Jim Collins, primarily about his book "Good to Great: Why Some
Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't"
=sr_2_1/103-2713968-5047069>. When I heard the title, I thought of someone's
comment that hp has gone from a great company to a good company. It helps
that he was being interviewed by Charlie Rose. And, since I don't normally
read management books, nor am I a business manager, I am probably not
qualified to have an opinion. But I found what I heard compelling.

One of his comments was that good research finds something unexpected, and
great research finds something you didn't want to find. He found that while
it was important for companies to have core values, it did not seem to
matter what those core values were. The important thing was having them and
practicing them.
