I agree with Stuart. There is more to a job than money. But then again,
until I win the lottery, it will be the primary reason that I get up
every day and go to work instead of following other pursuits.

This sounds like a statement from a very old-fashioned company, still
entrenched in the 'good ol boy' system of getting things done and
promoting people. Perhaps stated by the manager not willing to pay
market rate, and hoping to interest a candidate with
'substitutions/benefits' for a competitive salary?

It seems that the desire to keep a salary secret only applies when
someone isn't earning very much - after all, the salary of most chief
operating officers is public knowledge (okay, mostly publicly held
companies) and usually very large.

Someone switch to decaf. Of course salary isn't the only reason - there
are some jobs intolerable at any salary. But it should be the primary
interest. Let's face it...why does anyone go to work? To feel fulfilled
and productive? Someone could get that by working for a charitable
organization or whatever else makes that person happy.
